Are you excited for the new year? 2014 promises to be an exciting time for the music world which is great news for us and our weekly mixtapes! So let’s rejoice with some of the first new songs of the new year from St. Vincent, Del the Funky Homosapien, Anacortes, and many more great artists!

We’ll start our first mixtape of 2014 with the outspoken performer Del the Funky Homosapien. This incredible hip-hop artist has released a brand new free LP online entitled Iller Than Most and we’ve decided to include the opening track “Leader” on this week’s mix.
RIYL: Deltron 3030, Hieroglyphics

Moving out of the opening track’s intensity, we’ll explore some ambience and swelling composition with Alcest’s newest track “Délivrance.” This new song from the French black metal outfit is a step away from the dread and into a lighter sound, experimenting with post-rock and shoegaze. Yes it’s around ten minutes long, but this epic is worth sharing.

RIYL: Sigur Ros, Mogwai, Explosions in the Sky

Former Wu Lyf bassist Tom McClung is releasing new music this year under the moniker Francis Lung and this week we couldn’t get enough of his new track “A Selfish Man.” Bordering on British indie-rock and guitar-heavy dream-pop, Francis Lung is the artist to watch in 2014.

RIYL: Wu Lyf, Real Estate, Kisses

Annie Clark is definitely keeping fans of St. Vincent happy by periodically releasing new songs off of her upcoming self-titled record. The newest song, “Digital Witness” is sure to be a fan favorite of the year and it helps our mix blend together nicely.

RIYL: Cat Power, Sufjan Stevens

This week our mixtape’s centerpieces include three great covers by indie icons. Check out new adaptations of great songs from Britt Daniel, The Flaming Lips, and Beck!

The Brooklyn americana band Anacortes is preparing to release its debut album this February and celebrated with a music video for the track “A Great Unknown.”

RIYL: Dr. Dog, Josh Ritter, The Band

We’re going to get loud with this next song. Boston punkers Grass is Green debuted a song with one of the best titles ever this week. Listen to “Big Dog Tee Shirt Birthday Weekend” right here!

RIYL: Yuck, Speedy Ortiz

Orlando outfit Saskatchewan broke out in 2013 with an album reminiscent of the 1980s dream-pop era, so this new song from the band shouldn’t be too surprising to listeners. “Conclusion” is clearly the perfect title for the end of our mix, too!

RIYL: Washed Out, Dream Safari

Your latest mixtape will serve as a perfect gift for that somebody special that is perhaps a bit cooler than you. Do you want him or her to think you’re cool, too? You’re welcome!
