It's been almost two years since Lorde broke out with her hit single "Royals" and debut album Pure Heroine, so it's about time the 18-year-old pop star started working on record No. 2. On Wednesday night (April 29), frequent Lorde collaborator Joel Little opened up about how her sophomore effort is going, revealing that they're "experimenting" with different sounds.

In an interview with Billboard at the ASCAP Pop Music Awards, Little (who co-wrote all 10 songs on Pure Heroine including "Royals" and "Team") revealed that he and Lorde are writing the new album and messing with beats and music.

"We've written a couple of songs," Little said. "We haven't done a whole lot of production on it yet, we just want to make sure the songs are really good and try and experiment with some new things -- just different beats and whatever occurs in the studio."

The "experiment" may be Little talking lightly. He also revealed that the songwriters are "not pigeonholing ourselves in any particular way."

"[We are] just trying new things. We can take the time to make sure we've explored every option," he revealed.

Little's comments about exploring new sounds fall in line with comments he made in February about Lorde's new album. "We haven't got some planned out 'this is what it's going to sound like," he said. "I think we're just going to start writing and when it starts to feel right, we'll know that it's right. It's pretty simple really."

Because the album has just began production, information about a tentative release date or title are unavailable.
