Apple seems to have inherited a problematic piece of machinery, as it issued a recall for Beats Pill XL speakers after it was reported that the audio equipment could potentially cause burns and fire hazards. The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission cited eight cases where the battery of a Pill overheated, in some cases causing burns to the user and in other cases damaging the surface it was laying upon (according to Billboard).

Apple didn't indicate how many units were being recalled but the CPSC estimated that the problem affected around 222,000 copies in the U.S.

"Apple has received eight reports of incidents of the speakers overheating, including one with a burn to a consumer's finger and one with damage to a consumer's desk," read its report. "Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled product and contact Apple for a $325 Apple Store credit or electronic payment."

Tim Cook and the bosses at Apple can't be too happy at the recall, which will work out to more than $72 million in losses (assuming everyone heeds the recall and gets the store credit). The Beats Pill XL is manufactured in China and was on the market prior to Beats being bought by Apple during 2014. Although Apple fans can be rather snobbish, they aren't lying...the company's products rarely defect and injure you.

Although consumers will be compensated with $325 to spend at the Apple store, no indication has been given that Beats has fixed up the Pill. We know you're going to be tempted to spend that on a new set of Beats by Dre headphones, but some audiophiles would suggest you put that toward an iPad instead.
