Though 5 Seconds of Summer is perhaps best known for its pop-punk sound, the "She's Kinda Hot" band wasn't afraid of taking a few different chances on its new album Sounds Good Feels Good. In a new interview, 5SOS member Calum Hood admitted that he took some surprising influences for the band's second album, including less obvious music such as Third Eye Blind.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Hood admitted that the band has grown up since releasing its self-titled debut album last year, and that while 5 Seconds of Summer had some songs they wrote as teenagers, this new LP features more personal, mature material.

In the middle of that material, however, are some sounds that 5SOS fans may be less used to. While the band has always grabbed from Green Day and My Chemical Romance in its sound, Hood admitted to listening to some less obvious music for Sounds Good Feels Good.

"There's definitely still guitar-driven songs. It has a lot of different influences. I was listening to a lot of Third Eye Blind and Queen and a lot of '90s bands as well, which I was discovering. That helped me to write in that headspace," he said. "I went through a massive Third Eye Blind phase so I was trying to take those simple melodies over the quirky guitar lines and try and incorporate that into our music."

Hood also revealed that the band is still trying to incorporate its sense of humor into its new album despite taking on a more mature sound. Part of that comes into the album's straightforward title: Sounds Good Feels Good.

"We were recording our songs and we were doing changeovers and we just finished the take. We listened to it back and Luke [Hemmings] just said, 'Sounds good feels good,' and we were like, 'F*ck that's great,'" he said. "I was watching the James Brown documentary last night and he says the exact same thing. If it sounds good and feels good then it must be good."

Sounds Good Feels Good will be released on Oct. 23. The album is being led by single "She's Kinda Hot" as well as promo tracks "Fly Away" and "Jet Black Heart."
