Chris Cornell's highly anticipated solo album is out today (September 18), titled Higher Truth filled with mostly acoustic rock tunes. Last night, the Soundgarden frontman took the Tonight Show stage to promote the release with a performance of "Nearly Forgot My Broken Heart."

The song was the previously released as a music video showing him escaping an execution by hanging in a western cowboy town.

Vevo also released an audio video for his next single "Worried Moon" a day ahead of the album, but it was taken down or disabled shortly after release.

Both songs utilize his hard-rock voice and more subdued acoustic folk instrumentation to combine for a new fresh sound we haven't heard from the artist before. "Worried Moon" in particular follows this path with just some simple guitar chords, bass, piano and what sounds like a drum box. Listen to the song below.

In a new interview with Rolling Stone, he talks about how he came to discover folk as an influence. He said he first rejected it when he was first exposed to it in the '70s, but soon came around when artists such as Tom Waits, Jim Croce, Cat Stevens and Nick Drake found their way to his ear.

He went on to admit his last solo album, 2009's Scream, was a "noble failure." The album made it to the top 10, but reviews of the album worked on by hip-hop producer Timbaland were pretty scathing.

He's hoping to rectify those former reviews this week when Higher Truth debuts Friday. Check out the full tacklist below as well as his performance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon.
