While this isn't exactly the return to the Premier League that Chelsea FC fans were hoping for, legendary striker Didier Drogba has allegedly announced his retirement from professional football in order to join his former club's coaching staff under interim manager Guus Hiddink. After an embarrassing start to the 2015/2016 season, taking on Drogba in a coaching position could be the recipe for success for the defending champions. This news would also mean that Drogba has ended his contract with the MLS team, the Montreal Impact, after only one season. Read more about this rumor below.

This rumor started over at French publication L'Equipe, which has since spread. Originally, the rumor was that the star footballer could return to play and coach, but now it's more likely that a coaching position would be available to the 37-year-old.

Taking a look at Drogba's short MLS career, though, the striker has an impressive amount of goals in such little time. He has scored 12 goals in 14 games, so we can imagine Montreal doesn't want this retirement rumor to be true (via Fox Sports).

This is still speculation for now, but we'll definitely be listening for updates on this big news.

According to The Daily Star, interim coach Guus Hiddink certainly planted the seeds for this rumor to grow.

"A few days ago before the Sunderland game I said that those rare kind of former players with this status would be very good for any club to have," the manager said. "Especially him because he's a Chelsea legend, but for the moment we have to respect his contract with Montreal. It depends on the player himself, you need to give them time and opportunities to find out what the best is for them. It may be on the coaching staff or maybe as an ambassador, but that is too official and functional for me. They need to go into the squad and help players with their experience."
