The 2016 Billboard Music Awards is set to kickoff next month, but before the big day arrives viewers get a chance to see which artists have earned bragging rights as a finalist for the upcoming ceremony. On Monday (Apr. 11), Billboard premiered a lengthy list of nominees and their respected categories with three male musicians leading the pack. The Weeknd, Drake and Justin Bieber dominated the nominations.

There must be something in the water, aye? The top contenders are all straight out of Canada, racking up double-digit nominations in various categories across the board. The Weeknd is bound to go home with at least one award, seeing as the "Acquainted" crooner earned himself a whopping 19 nominations in 16 different fields. Bieber trails behind with 12 in 11 categories, while Drake tied with New Jersey native Fetty Wap as finalists for 11 awards in 10 categories.

This is the first year The Weeknd, whose real name is Abęl Makkonen Tesfaye, has been nominated for a Billboard Music Award. The 26-year-old Toronto two-time Grammy Award winner is up for Top Artist, Top Male Artist, Top Billboard 200 Artist, Top R&B Artist, Top R&B Album and much more.

"Billboard Music Awards finalists are based on key fan interactions with music, including album and digital songs sales, radio airplay, streaming, touring and social interactions on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube, Spotify and other popular online destinations for music," according to Billboard.com.
