Demi Lovato and her actor boyfriend Wilmer Valderrama have split after almost six years together, but said in a statement that they will remain friends.
The “Stone Cold” singer and her former beau posted a message on Instagram announcing the break-up this past Friday night (June 3).
“After almost 6 loving and wonderful years together, we have decided to end our relationship. This was an incredibly difficult decision for both of us, but we have realized more than anything that we are better as best friends. We will always be supportive of one another. Thank you to everyone who has offered us kindness and support over the years,” the message read.
This is an about face from Lovato’s fairly recent interview with Latina Magazine, where she expressed just how passionate her boyfriend Valderrama is. Twenty-three-year-old Lovato has been in a relationship with 36-year-old Valderrama since 2010, and has always cited that he is a great friend and a wonderful support system for her.
In the past, Lovato had been linked to a string of celebrities, including Joe Jonas, the older brother of Miley Cyrus, Trace Cyrus, and fellow former Disney star Cody Linley.
“When I dated white guys, it wasn’t as passionate as my relationship with Wilmer,” Lovato said to Latina. “Maybe that’s just Wilmer. But I do believe that Latin people are more expressive, more passionate with their emotions. He’s very manly, and he can be stubborn like Latino men can, but he’s protective and he cares so much and loves so hard.”
It had appeared that Valderrama was just as in love with Lovato, and often gushed about her in various social media posts, so the split may come as a surprise to fans.
