In 2014, many fans were shocked after rumors about Ellie Goulding cheating on her then-rumored-boyfriend Ed Sheeran with One Direction member Niall Horan circulated around the internet. Today, the singer is coming clean and revealing that the allegations heavily impacted her life.

Speaking to Daily Mail UK, the "Burn" hitmaker said the issue, which happened nine years ago, caused her "a lot of trauma" and she found it fascinating that many people were interested in the story.

The 36-year-old British pop star said she was envious of her friends who had private lives and enjoyed their dating phase in private because in her case, everything she did was "written about" and made her feel like a "terrible person" and admitted she struggled because she's not.

According to Billboard, many fans have been theorizing that Ed Sheeran's hit song "Don't" was about Goulding. The song revolves around a person who was cheated on by a lover who makes "money the same way," hinting that it's about another musician.

This was not the first time the "Lights" hitmaker spoke about the issue as she previously spoke to Elle UK that she was never in a relationship with the "Thinking Out Loud," but confirmed she went on a few dates with Niall Horan.

The musician also responded to one of her haters on TikTok last year who accused her of cheating, saying the rumors are "False!!!!"

In her comment, Goulding noted that even though she could laugh about the incident today, she won't deny that it "changed things" for her.

"I became kind of reclusive. I didn't want to perform. That's why I wrote that comment because every day I get comments about this stupid teenage situation. It was nothing and it was private - and it caused me such a huge amount of grief and I resent it," she added.

Regarding her relationship status today, Ellie Goulding is happily married to Caspar Jopling since 2019, they share a son together who was born in 2021.

On the other hand, Ed Sheeran is also married to Cherry Seaborn; they share two daughters together.

Speaking about where she stands with Sheeran today, the musician said everything is in the past now and they're friends.

The singer's new album, "Higher Than Heaven," was initially scheduled for a February 3 release, but she moved it to March 24 due to "some exciting opportunities" that she couldn't wait to share with her fans.
