A new trend is coming to town, and that is recreating an iconic dance scene from the 2007 movie adaptation of the musical, "Hairspray."

For some unknown reason, the original song from "Hairspray", "The New Girl In Town" was used on TikTok, replicating The Dynamite's awesome choreography of the song.

Hundreds of TikTok content creators have already covered the song, giving their best to replicate the bombastic performance from the musical.

Mainly black content creators have covered "The New Girl In Town," as they were only dancing on The Dynamites part of the song.

Even members of the West End production of "Hamilton" have given their own cover of their iconic scene.

The "The New Girl In Town" audio has since been used almost 20,000 times on the video-sharing platform.

Most of the videos, only featured one dancer using the Square dance filter to make it seem like they were a trio, mirroring the actual composition of the performance in the film.

In the 2007 film, the Black trio, The Dynamites (played by Arike Rice, Tanee McCall, and Nadine Ellis) originally wrote and performed the song, but was revealed to have been covered by the movie's main antagonist, Amber Von Tussle played by Brittany Snow, and her friends Shelley and Tammy on the Corny Collins Show.

It is important to note that "The New Girl In Town" and "Ladies Choice" were original songs made for the film, and were not from the original musical on which the movie was based on. In the 2016 live television musical adaptation, only "Ladies Choice" was adapted to the small screen, making "The New Girl In Town" an original in the 2007 film.

Hairspray 'The New Girl In Town' Issue

Some netizens, however, have pointed out to white content creators who have covered the song that it was "inappropriate" for them to perform a cover of the song considering the original message of the performance conveyed in the film.

In the film, Velma Von Tussle, played by Michelle Pfeiffer, confronted Motormouth Maybelle, played by Queen Latifah, asking why she covered the same song that her daughter, Amber, performed on the Corny Collins Show.

Latifah point blankly answered that The Dynamites wrote it so they have no issue performing it. This mirrors the theft of black artists' art during the 1950s and 1960s by white artists. After white artists performed the songs and made them a hit, Black artists do not receive credit or royalties for such, hence the netizens' current sentiments.

The Dynamites were based on The Supremes, Vandellas, and The Marvelettes, who were prominent R&B girl groups at the time.
