With "Phantom of the Opera" closing and "Chicago" becoming the longest-running musical on Broadway, "The Lion King" is slated to achieve its milestone 10,000th performance this coming weekend, May 6, 2023.

"The Lion King" is currently the second-longest running show on Broadway and the third overall on the longest so far, as "Phantom" remains at No. 1 despite recently closing production.

'The Lion King' 10,000th Performance

According to Playbill, "The Lion King" is currently readying for its 10,000th performance on Broadway at the Minskoff Theatre.

To date, it is the current longest-running Disney Broadway show in history and the longest-running musical directed by a female (Julie Taymor).

As of February 2023, Broadway World reports that "The Lion King" is the highest-grossing Broadway musical of all time. The outlet says that the show has amassed more than $1.7 billion in revenue and has been attended by under 17 million people on Broadway.

Last November 2022, the show celebrated its 25th Year Anniversary. Debuting in 1997 at the Orpheum Theatre in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the musical moved to Broadway in October of that same year at the New Amsterdam Theatre.

However, it relocated to the Minskoff Theatre in 2006 to make way for "Mary Poppins." Since then, the entire herd has congregated at the Pride Rock over a thousand times already.

At the 1998 Tony Awards, "The Lion King" won Best Musical, Best Direction of a Musical, Best Choreography, Best Scenic Design, Best Lighting Design, and Best Costume Design. It helped launch the careers of Heather Headley and Jason Raize on Broadway, the actors who played Nala and Simba on the show.

Playbill also noted that to date, 115,000 people enjoy watching Timon and Pumba with Simba in eight productions across three continents every week as the show plays in the United States, Europe, and Australia.

How To Get 'The Lion King' Tickets on Broadway?

According to Broadway.com, "The Lion King" tickets on Broadway for its 10,000th show start at $219 for Mezzanine seats. Meanwhile, Premium Orchestra tickets for "The Lion King" could balloon up to $394 for the remaining best seats at the house.
