Sinead O'Connor's ex-partner does not believe she died of natural causes.

On July 26, 2023, the London Metropolitan Police found O'Connor unresponsive at her London flat and pronounced her dead afterward. Months after her death, the London Inner South Coroner's Court released a statement in which it confirmed the late Irish singer died due to natural causes, but her ex-partner does not believe so.

Sinead O'Connor's Cause of Death Is Reportedly Different

O'Connor's ex-boyfriend, Dermot Hayes, suggested that the "Magdalene" singer passed away after she could no longer go on with a broken heart following the death of her child.

"From this you can surmise that a broken heart is a real illness symptom, and a cause of death," he told the Irish Sun (via The Mirror). "It doesn't make Sinead's passing any less painful. It was more to do with a broken heart than anything else."

O'Connor suffered a massive loss when her son Shane, 17, went missing from a hospital ward in January 2022. He was admitted to the facility after his two attempts to end his life.

Police launched a probe while searching for Shane, but O'Connor later confirmed her son died by suicide.

"My beautiful son, Nevi'im Nesta Ali Shane O'Connor, the very light of my life, decided to end his earthly struggle today and is now with God. May he rest in peace and may no one follow his example. My baby. I love you so much. Please be at peace," she wrote at that time.

The "Nothing Compares 2 U" singer constantly posted about Shane in the months thereafter that even her final post was about him.

On July 17, over a week before her death, she shared her struggles since her son died in a since-deleted X page.

"Been living as undead night creature since," the singer said. "He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him."

While coping with grief, O'Connor worried fans when she once said she wanted to follow her son.

"There is no point living without him," she revealed. "Everything I touch, I ruin. I only stayed for him. And now he's gone. I've destroyed my family. My kids don't want to know me."

She later penned an apology statement and confirmed she was on her way to the hospital with the police to seek treatment.
