Live Review: Conor Oberst, Dawes Get Folky and Full in New York City's Central Park with Career-Spanning Setlist

Jul 2014 17:00PM EDT

As the sun set in New York City's Central Park last night (July 29), singer-songwriter Conor Oberst was talking about cannibalism and the looming demise of humankind. "This song is about when all the water and oil runs out and we turn into cannibals. It's not that far away," the frontman warned the sizable and enthusiastic crowd before easing into the Bright Eyes track "No One Would Riot For Less."READ MORE

Walter Bonedale Hanging Around the John Ryle House

Concert Review: John Ryle House in Haledon, NJ, 7/12/14

Jul 2014 14:44PM EDT

The last time I went to a show at the John Ryle House in Haledon, NJ, bayonets were discovered in the garage by a couple of people who had consumed an exorbitant amount of alcohol. Nobody died or was even (seriously) injured, but that's the sort of thing that would normally persuade me to never return. So why did I go back last night? Because Omegalith and Huge Pupils were playing.READ MORE

Hologram City, 6/14/14

Concert Review: Hologram City in Hackensack, NJ, 6/14/14

Jun 2014 12:24PM EDT

Continuing the long line of New Jersey basement venues with awesome names is Hologram City in Hackensack. Though most basement shows I've been to take place in the middle of quiet residential neighborhoods, complete with disgruntled neighbors who love calling the cops, Hologram City sits right at the corner of a busy intersection and even has its own (small) parking lot, which makes it a great location for a venue. The show I attended there last night was titled "Basement Maneuvers - An Electronic Evening," and as that name suggests, it was an evening of performances by electronic artists. Though I've been to plenty of shows featuring electronic artists, and have even played with some myself, I'd never been to an entirely electronic show before, so the atmosphere and flow of the evening was very new to me.READ MORE

Knights Templar

Concert Review: John Ryle House in Haledon, NJ, 6/13/14

Jun 2014 14:47PM EDT

Basement shows rarely ever run smoothly on a normal day, but having a show on Friday the 13th almost guarantees that nothing will go right. Despite the date, however, the show I attended last night at the John Ryle House in Haledon, NJ was one of the most efficient and pleasant basement shows I've ever been to. For starters, the show only started 25 minutes late, instead of the usual 90 minutes.READ MORE

After two music-filled days in the sun, Governors Ball Music Festival continued on for Day Three on Sunday (June 8). Dope Ness at the Dopeness in Jersey City

Concert Review: The Dopeness in Jersey City, 6/6/14

Jun 2014 10:38AM EDT

Though I've performed music in Jersey City before, I'd never gotten a true sense of the city's tight-knit art scene until I visited last night for a three-act show at the Dopeness, a Mexican restaurant with a performance space in the back room. As Steve Donahue of Young Legs described Jersey City to me, it's like "Brooklyn, but less smelly and terrifying." Ever since neighboring Hoboken became too stiflingly gentrified to support an arts community (its legendary venue Maxwell's closed last year), Jersey City has proven itself to be a worthy alternative for Hudson County, and all of North Jersey for that matter.READ MORE
