Taylor Swift was in Tokyo, Japan, where she began the new leg of her ever-successful series of concerts called "The Eras Tour" and fans were surprised as she played one of her oldest songs that she wrote back when she wasn't famous yet.

According to Us Weekly Magazine, the pop star performed a ballad rendition of the track "The Outside" at the Tokyo Dome on Friday, February 9, 2024.

"This one I wrote when I was 12 years old, so this song is 175 years old," Swift joked.

She later played the track as a surprise song in an emotional way and fans were happy that she still remembered the track after all these years.

In addition to "The Outside," she also played the track "Superman" from her album "Speak Now" as one of the surprise songs.

Taylor Swift 'The Outside' History

Per the outlet, the track has been around for nearly 20 years as it was one of the songs from her debut self-titled album that she has yet to re-release.

In 2007, the then-teenager country star spoke with Entertainment Weekly in an interview where she gave a background about the song.

"It's about what I was going through at the time. I was a complete outcast at school and never fit in, never felt like I belonged," she said.

She added that when she was about 12 or 13 years old, she would write music about relationships even if she wasn't in a relationship because she loved observing what other people go through.

"In the case of 'The Outside,' I was writing exactly what I saw. I was writing from pain," she added.
