The Foo Fighters kicked off their weeklong residency on The Late Show with David Letterman just last night in order to celebrate the upcoming Nov. 10 release of their eighth studio album Sonic Highways. Before taking to the stage, where they covered Black Sabbath's "War Pigs" alongside Zac Brown Band's frontman, the group's singer Dave Grohl sat down with the legendary comedian and talk show host to chat about the album and the forthcoming HBO series of the same name, beginning Friday, Oct. 17.

Calling it "a regional sampling of music in the United States," Letterman joked that his sidekick Paul Schaffer had a similar idea years ago. To that, Grohl responded, "When I first came up with this idea, the first people I called were Dave [Letterman] and Rob Burnett. I said I have this idea; I'd really like to make it happen. If it weren't for these guys and the Letterman show we would never have been able to pull this idea off."

Grohl continued describing the upcoming HBO series where the group ventures to eight cities across America for one week each, records some music sans the lyrics, and finally interviews a famed musician from that city. "On the last day, I sit down with all the transcripts from the interviews from that city. ... I cut and paste and put the song together from all of the interviews."
