The nominees for the 87th Academy Awards will be announced on Jan. 15, and today, R&B singer John Legend has shared his Best Original Song hopeful -- "Glory" -- which will be featured in the upcoming Martin Luther King, Jr. drama, Selma. The song features some socially conscious guest verses from Common, who references the recent unrest in Ferguson, Missouri, and joins the ever-growing list of artists to release tribute songs to Michael Brown.

Selma tells the true story of the Selma to Montgomery marches of 1965, which Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. took part in and which led to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965. The film stars David Oleyowo, Tom Wilkinson, Tim Roth, Oprah Winfrey, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and Common himself, among others, and is directed by Ava DuVernay. It opens in limited release on Christmas Day, with a wide release following on Jan. 9.

"I love that it's this specific story," Common told Screen Slam about Selma, "because you get to see that Martin Luther King was part of a team. He was a representation of the people, so it's not just this one man...by himself. This one man was chosen as the voice, as the face. He had the heart and the spirit to do it, but it was so many people behind it...we don't even know some of their names, so many people who sacrificed."
