"The Best Beatles Songs" is a poll that you won't see Music Times touching with a ten-foot pole. One factor is laziness: There are just so many hits from the band...sorting them would be a nightmare. However, the major reason would be our cowardice: When a band's discography is so epic, regardless of what track you place at the top, the armies representing every other single in the group's catalogue will lash out. That's why we left the task to NME, a more well-connected publication in the band's home of the UK.

The publication gathered representatives of just about every major British band of the moment, as well as American rockers such as Dave Grohl and The Beach Boys' Brian Wilson (and, for some reason, Run The Jewels). The panel assembled a list of the Top 100 Beatles songs (the full list will appear in the current paper issue of the magazine).

The winner? "Strawberry Fields Forever," the group's hit single released prior to Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band. If you disagree with the panel's findings, you're going to need to argue with two dudes who know a thing or two about the scene: One was George Martin, the producer who worked as an arranger and composer to complete the most complex of the band's work. In other words, no one outside of Messrs. Harrison, Lennon, McCartney and Starr is more qualified than him to comment on the band's catalogue, and he chose "Strawberry Fields" as his personal favorite. Another fan was The Who guitarist Pete Townshend, who also opted for Lennon's single.

Before you try to start an argument with either of these gentlemen, check to see if your favorite made the Top 10:

01) "Strawberry Fields Forever"

02) "A Day In The Life"

03) "I Want To Hold Your Hand"

04) "Here Comes The Sun"

05) "Blackbird"

06) "Tomorrow Never Knows"

07) "Across The Universe"

08) "While My Guitar Gently Weeps"

09) " Am The Walrus"

10) "Hey Jude"

(We're curious about no. 10...Julian Lennon was one of the voters on the panel...does he vote "Hey Jude" high because it's about him? Or does that fact embarrass him, leading him to vote it as far back as possible? Just wondering.)
