Despite a looming legal clash going on between various music promoters and the property on which it's held, the Electric Forest Festival announced its lineup for the 2014 event.
The event, held in Rothbury, MI, focuses strongly on electronic music, but this year packs a decent group of non-EDMers as well. Among the notable non-DJ acts are Lauryn Hill, Aloe Blacc, Matt & Kim, St. Lucia, and Bombino. The electronic field is dense, even if the headliners aren't quite as big as other prominent EDM festivals. Steve Angello, STS9, Cut Copy, Zedd AND Zeds Dead will put the "electric" in Electric Forest. Although Avicii won't be present, Blacc might be encouraged to perform "Wake Me Up!," the hit he wrote for Avicii, with an electronic backing track.
Last week Music Times reported that AEG/Madison House Entertainment, the current producers of Electric Forest, were in a legal tussle with SFX Entertainment, which made a move to buy the rights to the property from under their feet. AEG/MHE has a 20-year contract with Progressive Resorts to use the property, but Progressive is under financial strain, and SFX offered to pay off its debt if it turned tables on AEG. The dispute has the potential to derail this year's festival, but AEG/MHE seems confident enough, based on its lineup release.
