United haven't put the ball into the net for quite some time, so perhaps today's match will end that drought.

"We are hopefully making history but it takes time. We are the best defenders in the Premier League; you say we cannot attack and it's not true. It's only a moment in a process," manager Louis Van Gaal told reporters. "When you don't score it is a bad period because football is scoring goals, because that makes the difference. I hope we will score against CSKA, but I know it will be very difficult as they are very organized."

According to reports, defender Aleksei Berezutski and midfielder Roman Eremenko are both very doubtful for the Moscow side. Memphis Depay of Manchester is expected to sit as well, according to Van Gaal.

"Every player needs a boost when he is out of the team and Memphis is not an exception," the coach said. "The consequence of not being in the national selection is because he is not playing that well. It is always the same - a player always has to perform well, otherwise there will be other players compared and the coach will make a choice."
