American Idol alum Karen Rodriguez recently put her own spin on Adele’s “Hello,” covering the mega hit in Spanglish.

In a five minute clip, Rodriguez alternates belting out “Hello” in Spanish and English over a flawless piano played by Alex Bilo. She opened up to Vibe Viva about the cover and her decision to put a bilingual twist on the song.

“I connected deeply with ‘Hello’ and after seeing how well it was received, I knew people would enjoy hearing it in a new way,” she said. “I decided to give it a twist and write my own lyrical adaptation in Spanish, opting out of a literal translation. I wanted to express what the song made me feel, and I also wanted to stay as true to the melody and to Adele’s flow in the original. [But] I am a bilingual artist, I love singing and writing music in both languages, and I hope this cover serves as a platform where I can gain more fans who genuinely love and appreciate the work I do!”

Adele’s version of “Hello” currently sits at No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 for the seventh straight week. Contributing factors to the song’s success include the fact that the single sold the most (233,000 copies), was streamed the most (27.5 million plays) and was the most-heard song on radio (166 million audience impressions).

The sing also reigns supreme on the Billboard 200 for the third consecutive week. Adele has become the first artist in history to sell over one million copies in two separate weeks.

“Hello” served as the lead single from Adele’s latest album, 25, which broke some records as well. Adele sold 3.38 million copies of 25 in her first week, shattering NSYNC’s previously set record by nearly a million copies.

Rodriguez's rendition debuted on the Billboard Latin Digital Songs chart at No. 7.
