As Stephen Colbert gets back into the Late Show groove at the start of the new year, he once again proves that his show is hosting some of the finest music acts around with a roaring performance from the British outfit Foals performing "Mountains At My Gates."

Where Foals' latest album, What Went Down, can often be slow, tempered and melancholy, the band wasn't showing that side of them at all on Colbert's stage. The band roared in with an energetic performance that had lead singer Yannis Philippakis yelling and convulsing as the song built to its magnificent climax.

The performance looks and sounds like a time when musicians and the public really deeply cared about late night performers, when a performance on Johnny Carson or David Letterman's show could really change the whole trajectory of the band.

Foals had that level of passion burning in them as the took the stage and didn't waste one second of screen-on time to make its case to the public that they are a band worth paying attention to.

Watch the performance below.

The band's network performance is the last time the members will be state-side until their recently announced sets at Coachella and Hangout music festivals. The group is immediately heading to Australia before starting a string of European dates.

2015 was a good year for the band as critics widely embraced the new album even if American audiences at large did not. Still, What Went Down managed to perform quite well on the UK charts narrowly losing the No. 1 spot to The Weeknd's Beauty Behind The Madness back in September.

Colbert has a solid lineup coming throughout the week with Andra Day taking the stage Wednesday with her soulful R&B styling and country feminist artist Kacey Musgraves on Friday.
