Zayn Malik may just be days away from the release of his debut album Mind of Mine, but there's still one looming question on everyone's mind: why, exactly did the "Pillowtalk" singer leave One Direction? And what is his relationship with his former bandmates like now? In a new cover story for NME, Zayn revealed that he does, in fact, still talk to one 1D memberand also revealed details about the day he left the boy band.
Zayn revealed that while he's tried to reconnect with each of the remaining 1D members, some people have not returned the favor. ""I tried to have contact but nobody's reached out. So... whatever," he said.
However, despite not seeing the other members of One Direction in a year, he does still talk to one... Liam Payne. The two are mutually supportive of their new musical endeavors.
"I'm still probably the closest to Liam," Zayn revealed. "We talk on the phone. He congratulated me on my single, which was nice. I congratulated him on his Brit Award. It was a good chat. We haven't met up in a long time, so we want to meet up."
And, what about that fateful day, March 25, 2015, when Zayn decided to leave One Direction? When asked what he did that day, he made it seem like the decision was simple and natural.
"I called my security and I was like, 'I need to sort out a plane. I want to go home.' I don't know how I knew, but I just did," he said. "So I chatted with my cousin. Listened to a few songs. Just waited for my plane to come."
Zayn is set to release his debut album Mind of Mine on Friday.
