Maroon 5 has teamed up with Kendrick Lamar on their new single "Don't Wanna Know." Released late last night and sent out to radio promptly, the new Benny Blanco-produced track comes with a tropical beat that may be hitting the tail end of that pop-dance trend.
Over the simple beat Adam Levine laments about an ex he can't over that he doesn't want to know what is going on in her life.
"Do you think of me? Of what we used to be? / Is it better now that I'm not around? / My friends are actin' strange, they don't bring up your name / Are you happy now?," he sings in the pre-chorus.
Despite its many shortcomings, the song does have a catchy, earworm nature to it. "Don't Wanna Know" will hit radio hard and probably do well on the charts. Kendrick's verse gives it some added legitimacy, though he is only there for 18 seconds.
He continues the theme of trying to get over an ex with his own verse, but takes it digital.
"No more "please stop" / No more hashtag boo'd up screenshots / No more tryin' make me jealous on your birthday / You know just how I made you better on your birthday, oh / Do he do you like this, do he woo you like this? / Do he lay it down for you, touch your poona like this?," raps Lamar in his brief verse.
This is the first new song from Maroon 5 in two years since the release of their V bonus single "This Summer" in 2015. They had success in 2014 and 2015 with hits like "Maps," "Animals," "Sugar" and "This Summer."
This is the first time Maroon 5 and Kendrick Lamar have collaborated, but Adam Levine and Kendrick did guest on Lonely Island's "YOLO" in 2013.
They will premiere the music video for "Don't Wanna Know" on NBC's TODAY show on Friday, Oct. 14. They team up with David Dobkin again, who directed their "Sugar" visual. Maroon 5 also have a televised appearance scheduled for Nov. 3 on Ellen.
