In a now-viral video, the "Solar Power" hitmaker" is seen shushing a singing crowd as she finishes what seemed to be an acapella version of "Writer in the Dark."

"I just woke up. I just wanted to talk about this thing of me shushing people at my shows. That was something that I did on that one song a couple times when I wanted to sing it a capella or off the microphone so people could hear me and because I wanted to try something different," she elaborated.

"If you come to my shows, you know it's an hour-and-a-half of all of us singing and screaming together. Also that dramatic-ass move was literally for an album called 'Melodrama', so don't stress too hard," Lorde explained further.

Lorde Performs 'Writer in the Dark' on Chicago Concert

"Writer in the Dark" was one of Lorde's critically-acclaimed pieces as it was said that it channeled a bit of Kate Bush. Jack Antonoff co-wrote and co-produced the track.

Lorde finally spoke up about the issue after she talked about it on her recent Chicago stop for the "Solar Power" North American tour, right before she performed "Writer in the Dark" for the first time since 2018.

Per Lorde, she was still 19 then and was "very dramatic" and had "a lot of feelings." The now 25-year-old singer added that the internet had decided that her gesture before was "very band very rude."

"I think they mustn't have come to one of these shows cos it's such a communal vibe. We're all singing and screaming all the time," she said recently.

Lorde also double-downed on the backlash she received, noting that she has been "misunderstood" after seeing the comments all over the internet.

The GRAMMY-awarded singer then invited the crowd to sing along as she sang the controversial track.

This is the first time Lorde has performed several songs from "Solar Power" to a huge live audience. Initially, she was set to kick off his World Tour down under in New Zealand and Australia but was forced to reschedule until next year.
