Over the weekend, Alicia Keys performed during Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee festivities, but the singer quickly became a hot topic after singing one of her classic songs.
Fans were perplexed as the award-winning singer-songwriter performed her song "Empire State of Mind" at the event in London, England.
The song has become one of her most successful singles. However, the song's lyrics said that it is a love letter to New York City, not London, leaving fans perplexed as to why Alicia would sing the song at a British celebration.
"She's singing about New York in London," one Twitter user commented after hearing and watching Keys perform.
Another social media user remarked, "Why is Alicia Keys singing about how great New York City is at a Queen's Day event?"
A perplexed Twitter user said, "If this is supposed to represent the finest of British, why are we singing about New York in London?"
However, it appeared like Alicia was aware of the audience's bewilderment throughout her performance since she promptly changed the words in the following line to "London" rather than "New York."
Other British Fans are Disappointed with Alicia Keys
Alicia Keys had a lot of critics, and many of them didn't think her performance was appropriate, especially on Queen Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee.
Aside from practically singing about her love for New York in front of Buckingham Palace, she also incurred the fury of British fans by beginning her performance by comparing London to New York.
"When I'm in London, I feel like I'm at home," Keys stated moments before singing. It makes me think of New York."
Alicia Keys was one of several A-list performers for the Queen, including Manuel Miranda, Andrea Bocelli, Diana Ross, and Craig David.
The Platinum Party at the Palace was held at Buckingham Palace, with many admirers congregating outside the grounds to watch the event.
