The Proclaimers was originally a part of King Charles III's official playlist to celebrate his upcoming coronation and other known artists from the United Kingdom like Harry Styles, Years and Years, and many more.

However, their song "I'm Gonna Be (500 Miles)" was officially removed from the lineup due to a controversial matter; what happened?

According to The BBC, the outlet noted that the main reason why the duo's track was omitted was due to their issue last year when they agreed with a republican demonstrator who heckled during the royal's proclamation, saying "who elected him?"

The man was later arrested in Oxford after the incident.

In a previous interview, 1/2 of the duo, Charlie Reid, agreed with the man's sentiments, saying he spoke for him, adding, "he speaks for loads of other people. Not just in Scotland, but right around the UK."

As of this writing, the Proclaimers, consisting of twins Craig and Charlie Reid, have not issued a statement about the matter. Buckingham Palace and other organizers for the coronation have also yet to react to the issue.

King Charles Playlist Ahead of Coronation

In early reports, a spokesperson for the Department for Digital, Culture, Media, and Sport revealed that the playlist was created to "celebrate British and Commonwealth artists" ahead of the successor's coronation, which will be next month.

The list of songs was a combination of classic hits and newer tracks from artists like Harry Style, Kate Bush, Ed Sheeran, Tom Jones, Years and Years, David Bowie, Jeff Beck, Rod Stewart, and many more.

The Rolling Stones, who is one of the most iconic bands who hailed from the country, was seemingly snubbed on the playlist but the reason behind it was not revealed.

Variety reported that the likely reason why the playlist was released is to "get local masses in a festive mood."

King Charles Coronation Concert

Aside from the playlist, a coronation concert would also take place to celebrate the monarch's coronation and it would feature some of the biggest artists in the music industry.

Three of Take That's original lineup, Gary Barlow, Howard Donald, and Mark Owen, were previously confirmed to perform at the event, as well as Lionel Richie.

Fans were shocked when Katy Perry was also announced as one of the artists in the lineup, but Time Out noted that it wasn't random as she was previously appointed as an ambassador of a charity called British Asian Trust, founded by the King himself in 2020.

Other performers include Andrea Bocelli, Sir Bryn Terfel, Alexis Ffrench, Freya Ridings, Bette Midler, and the official coronation choir featuring singing groups from the NHS, LGBTQ+ choirs, and deaf singing choirs.

King Charles' coronation concert will be on Sunday, May 7, 2023, at 8 p.m.
