Among the many celebrities who skipped out on the 2023 MET Gala was Nicki Minaj. Despite being one of the most anticipated artists to grace the annual fashion event, the Queen of Rap was missing from the show.
Many fans have strong expectations that Minaj will be gracing the event because she and Karl Lagerfeld have quite a relationship. However, Minaj did not let the day end without honoring her late dear friend in her own way, which got fans much more confused about her absence from the ball.
Nicki Minaj MET Gala 2023 Absence?
Like Beyonce, Lady Gaga, Katy Perry, and Taylor Swift, Nicki Minaj skipped out last night's MET Gala. Honoring the late fashion icon with the theme "In Honor of Karl," many dressed with monochromatic looks and even as his famous cat, Choupette.
Minaj was one of the most anticipated artists to grace the event last night. She was even the nineteenth trending topic in the United States, with over 72,000 tweets, despite not being at the event.
As of this writing, Nicki Minaj has not yet revealed why she did not attend the event, as two of her most recent collaborators - Ice Spice and Kim Petras, were at the venue.
Nicki Minaj, Karl Lagerfeld Relationship
Unbeknownst to many, Nicki Minaj and Karl Lagerfeld have quite a history with each other.
According to Fashionista, Nina Garcia, the editor-in-chief of Elle Magazine in 2018, called Karl Lagerfeld to dress Nicki Minaj for their July 2018 issue.
In a recollection of how they first met in the magazine, Minaj revealed that Stephen Gan, Elle's Creative Director, approached her, and asked her if she would be open to the idea of being styled and photographed by Lagerfeld.
"I wanted to cry," Minaj said. "All I do is wear Chanel."
The duo had met before, actually, at a dinner thrown by Gan. But according to the Queen of Rap, they did not become best friends at that dinner.

"I thought he was going to be a snob, but in fact, he was so personable, looking me in my eyes and asking me, 'Do you like this?'" she recalled as they shot the Elle Cover in Paris.
In that same shoot, she was instructed by Gan to wake up a sleeping Lagerfeld in a sexy dress, to only found herself standing in the very same spot as the fashion visionary had a brain blast and wanted to take a photo of her right away as soon as he opened his eyes.
"I couldn't think straight anymore. I was like, Oh my God, I couldn't...it felt like a dream," Minaj added.
Confusingly, Minaj was not present at the MET Gala, but she took to Instagram on the same night and posted photos of the said Elle photoshoot while promoting her "Alone" music video with Kim Petras.
