Best Original Holiday Songs That Fit an Artist's Style Perfectly: Mariah Carey, Joni Mitchell, Queen and More [LISTEN]

Buzz 09:58AM EDT

I wonder if when Irving Berlin finished writing "White Christmas" he knew he had created a timeless classic. Holiday music has become its own little business, with artists often taking time out of their recording schedule to put together an album of covers and originals. It has become a bloated industry — every pop star and washed-up rock band has a holiday record. Sometimes they are really just mailing it in for a payday. Other times, though, they create something special. Mariah Carey, Tom Petty and Queen all have original Christmas tunes that fit right into their musical styles. You have to give props to those artists who dare to pen a Christmas tune. It is easy to just put a signature spin on something like "Blue Christmas" or "The Christmas Song." Those are already accepted by throngs of holiday shoppers who hear them every year. But what about Billy Squier thumping on "Christmas Is the Time to Say 'I Love You'"? Or Joni Mitchell's heartbreaking anthem "River"? You certainly hear those ones less than Frank Sinatra singing "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" while you are driving to work in December. These tunes are significantly younger than most holiday standards, so perhaps one day they will be thought of as classics. Until then, we will just call them good songs.READ MORE

Mariah Carey Sings 'All I Want for Christmas Is You' Live for Rockefeller Center Special; Twitter Not Impressed [WATCH]

Buzz 11:57AM EDT

Mariah Carey showed up late for a taping of her 1994 hit "All I Want for Christmas Is You" last night, Dec. 3, for the "Christmas in Rockefeller Center" special. Reports claim that Carey was stuck in a meeting with divorce lawyers, which is why NBC executives decided to let the diva sing the tune live. She did not exactly kill the performance, though, and fans were quick to criticize Carey on Twitter. You can see in the video below that Carey is continuously fiddling with the listening devices in her ears, a classic sign that singers are not "hearing it right." Now, she is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the song, MTV News points out, so it is understandable to miss a few notes. She struggles a little bit with the beginning, but once the backup singers join in, everything is fine. This is not 1990s Carey, but this is not the '90s, either. Kudos to the singer for doing it live anyway. Haters gonna hate.READ MORE

Buzz 15:35PM EDT

On this date during 1994, Boyz II Men stuck around for a 14th week atop the Billboard Hot 100 with its hit "I'll Make Love To You."
