Adam Sandler returned on Jimmy Fallon's "The Tonight Show" yesterday, April 6, to collaborate on new quarantine single, "Don't Touch Grandma."
The 81-second video, available on "The Tonight Show's" YouTube channel, promoted social distancing with their hilarious "new grandma rules." Both Fallon and Sandler were playing the guitar and taking turns singing the new safety anthem, from the safety of their own homes. Sandler seemingly adapted his "Billy Madison" persona, with his speech and his cap.
The song opens with an apparent universal truth: that everyone loves their grandma, and their grandma loves them too before continuing, "But thanks to this stupid virus/ We have new grandma rules."
The song was filled with witty lines. For one, the duo points out that grandmas "like to pinch your cheek and kiss your head and hug," but would not want grandma "catching any superbug."
Some new rules in the funny song included spending "a quarter to call her on the phone," keeping her on Zoom, or learning how to play canasta, the card game, "from across the room."
The song ended by assuring people that when the outbreak is over, we can all play with our grandmas again. "But for now, you still can smell her grandma smell from six feet away."
On an episode of "The Tonight Show" last week, Sandler also debuted a funny yet thoughtful tribute addressed to the doctors and nurses working against the coronavirus outbreak with his aptly-titled "Quarantine Song."
The song had its share of funny lyrics, "Doctors brought us into this world as babies/ doctors take good care of your grandma/ doctors always give you an old lollipop/ after hitting your knee with a hamma." His first chorus even ends with, "And I hope they save us soon/ 'Cause I'm really, really sick of my family."
Moreover, it brings to light the challenges faced by medical first responders. His first chorus opens with "Doctors and nurses will save us from this mess/ if we get them the supplies that they need." Meanwhile, his second chorus calls, "We got to build some ventilators and make more masks/ We got to do it now, so let's all come together."
Last night's episode also featured Lady Gaga. She will be curating the upcoming WHO and Global Citizen event "One World: Together at Home," which Fallon will co-host together with Jimmy Kimmel and Stephen Colbert, as well as the cast of children's show "Sesame Street." The show aims to raise additional funds in support of the medical professionals working against the outbreak, as well as nonprofit organizations providing food and shelter to the people affected by the coronavirus as well as the shelter-in-place orders.
Lady Gaga, during her videoconference guesting on "The Tonight Show," shared her quarantine experiences as well as reminding people to be kind.
Aside from Gaga and Sandler, another guest also on "One World: Together at Home" is Green Day frontman Billie Joe Armstrong who covered "I Think We're Alone Now" by Tommy James & The Shondells. Armstrong first released his cover of the 1967 rock hit as a part of his "No Fun Mondays," his series of song covers during this quarantine period.
