In a remarkable move, Sinead O'Connor made her last-ever recorded song, an evocative version of The Skye Boat Song for the time travel drama "Outlander. "

This rendition is said to have moved the show's main character and left producers astounded that she agreed to submit it.

Sinead 'O Connor Music in 'Outlander'

Before the final installment of "Outlander," executive producer Maril Davis wanted a fresh take on "The Skye Boat Song."

Knowing that composer Bear McCreary had connections, she contacted Sinead to put her unique spin on the classic. It was typically Raya Yarbrough's vocals in past seasons featured in this song.

It was a shock to many when the late singer accepted an invitation to join Claire's journey, a character traveling from present-day to 18th-century Scotland.

In the hit TV show, it's not unusual for Claire to be told her ideas are "crazy." Yet in this new season, a significant storyline concerning Claire's daughter Brianna emerges during the 1980's, so Maril felt inspired to give homage to that decade through the opening credits.

Maril said to Metro UK, "I'd heard that she really resonated with Claire's story. We knew she was struggling with her son's death and certainly wasn't prepared to come out and do a lot of press. But we were so excited and just went down that road."

Sinead O'Connor laid down her last recorded song in a two-day session at Grouse Lodge in Ireland. Unbeknownst to anyone, this recording would become iconic and "haunting," too.

Maril went on to add, "I feel like her story is very similar to Claire's; they've been kind of at the forefront of things, maybe they have not always been embraced by [sic] everything they've done, and people have kind of pushed back, and their ideas have maybe been 'crazy' and received a lot of backlashes."
