  • For Better or Worse, Village Voice's Pazz+Jop Rank the Top Albums and Singles of 2013 [POLL]

While many argue the merits of the long-suffering publication as well as the results therein--hey, the lot of us feel the same way about the Grammys--the Voice's P+J issue (conceived of by disgraced music editor, Bob Xgau) is about as consensus as we're likely to get these days.
  • Eminem, Janelle Monae, Haim Join Music Times' Top 10 Albums of 2013

As with any other group conversation between the writers of Music Times, the debate between what albums to include on the site's Top 10 of the year was less than professional. There was crying (Ryan Book), yelling (Nicole Oran), and even threats of violence (Caitlin Carter). Ultimately, after countless votes and demands for recounts, ten finalists were chosen. Check out the albums that we kept in the stereo throughout 2013, along with defenses from the staff writers that loved the most.
  • Carolyn Menyes' 2013 Playlist: Bear's Den, Lady Gaga, Janelle Monae and More

Music Times, like so many other music publications, was looking to publish a "Best of 2013" playlist. We met to discuss what such a playlist should include, and that's where we ran into trouble. • Women We Love Wednesdays: Janelle Monae

Janelle Monae is not afraid to stand out. The 28-year-old firecracker always puts 110 percent (at least) into everything she does. From her first studio album The Archandroid to this year's The Electric Lady, Monae has managed to blend together science fiction, pop and old school R&B to create some of the most original, riveting music out there today. With albums full of complex music and fascinating lyrics that recall 1950s sci-fi, Monae hasn't just broken the musical mold, she's absolutely shattered it.
