    It is official: Jay Z's move into the music streaming business has arrived and he is bringing a lot of his friends with him. At an industry event today at New York City's James A. Farley Post Office in Herald Square, Jay Z announced the launch of TIDAL with his 16 artist partners. The event was live streamed as Jay Z announced his plans for the Hi-FI service with Madonna, Kanye West, J. Cole, Nicki Minaj, Rihanna, Usher, deadmau5, Jason Aldean, Jack White, Daft Punk, Beyoncé, Arcade Fire's Win Butler, Alicia Keys, Coldplay and Calvin Harris.

    Analysts were surprised when the Empire soundtrack trumped Madonna's Rebel Heart on the Billboard 200, although it managed to take the no. 1 position on the actual albums chart. Even more surprising is how poorly the album has done going forward in its second week. Rebel debuted by selling around 117,000 copies during its first week but immediately dropped to 22,800 copies during its second week, dropping more than 80 percent and 14 places on the Albums chart. More dramatically, the record fell from no. 2 to no. 21 on the Billboard 200.

    Yesterday we reported that the Empire Season One Soundtrack had topped Madonna's Rebel Heart on the Billboard 200, thanks to the number of additional downloads and streams that it got, allowing it to take advantage of Billboard's new metrics and top the iconic chart. However pure album sales tell a different story. While Empire edged Rebel Heart by around 9,000 copies on the 200, the opposite was true on the Albums Chart, where Rebel Heart placed no. 1 with 116,500 copies sold and Empire took no. 2 with 107,000 copies moved.

Madge's album only sold 121,000 "equivalent" albums but unofficial tracking of pure album sales—or what the Billboard 200 used to be based on—suggest that Rebel Heart actually sold more albums than Empire did as a whole.

After one week of sales however, it seems that the region as a whole is ageist...or just less interested in the pop star's products than it once was. Rebel Heart finished at no. 2 on the Albums Charts, behind Sam Smith's In The Lonely Hour.

    Madonna made some bold comments recently about the state of women's rights. The Queen of Pop said that progress for women has been much slower than that of African-Americans and the LGBT community during an interview with 'Out' magazine. The comments come on the heels of the release of her new album 'Rebel Heart.' "Gay rights are way more advanced than women's rights. People are a lot more open-minded to the gay community than they are to women, period," she said. "It's moved along for the gay community, for the African-American community, but women are still just trading on their ass. To me, the last great frontier is women."
