The price of this headset is $599, which is much more than the public expected due to some misleading rhetoric from Oculus founder Palmer Luckey. In response to the backlash the high price has caused, Luckey addressed the issue in his recent Reddit AMA session. -

The next stage in video gaming is coming soon, and the first week of 2016 holds the first steps to take towards the future: pre-ordering the Oculus Rift! Though the Oculus controller won't come out until later this year, you can claim your virtual reality headset this week. Not only will you hold your place in line for VR gaming, you get two games with the Pre-Order, which starts at 8am PST on January 6, 2016.
