Bruno Mars will be joined by the Red Hot Chili Peppers during his headlining halftime performance for Super Bowl XLVIII, the LA Times reports. The news was officially announced yesterday during Fox's coverage of an NFC divisional playoff game.

"One of the most successful acts in rock history, Red Hot Chili Peppers, which is singer Anthony Kiedis, bassist Flea, drummer, Chad Smith, and guitarist Josh Klinghoffer, have sold more than 60 million albums, including five multi-platinum LPs, and won six Grammy Awards," the NFL said in a press release.

As the Times explains, the addition of the Chili Peppers "will likely broaden the appeal of the halftime show beyond Mars' fan base and appeal to older viewers."

The band will also perform at a Super Bowl-related event at Brooklyn's Barclays Center the night before the big game (February 1).

Other acts set to perform in and around New York City during Super Bowl Week include Foo Fighters, The Black Keys, Drake, The Roots, Kendrick Lamar and Janelle Monáe.

Super Bowl XLVIII takes place on February 2 at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. What do you think of the addition of the Red Hot Chili Peppers to the halftime show? Let us know in the comments section below!
