Saturday night, Foo Fighters front man Dave Grohl made a surprise appearance alongside Paul McCartney during his London concert to perform a rendition of Beatles Classic "I Saw Her Standing There." The two rockers have collaborated before while Grohl usually mans the drum kit but this time, he was jamming front and center at the O2 Arena while banging chords.
Aside from Grohl's captivating vignette, McCartney pulled out another surprise for fans by taking on a live version of McCartney II's synth-heavy "Temporary Secretary," notes Consequence of Sound. The song saw its first live performance ever and stayed true to the original track that was once dubbed "one of 12 weirdest Paul McCartney songs" and " an insane highlight of McCartney II," notes Rolling Stone. The Beatles legend continued to conjure elapsed classics with a live debut of the Beatles' "Another Girl."
The 2009 Grammy Awards saw the duos first performance of "I Saw Her Standing There" with Grohl drumming for the occasion. The two regrouped with Grohl's Nirvana bandmate Krist Novoselic and Foo Fighters guitarist Pat Smear to craft "Cut Me Some Slack" for Grohl's Sound City documentary, leading the track to winning a Grammy.
"It was magic for me playing with these guys," McCartney told Rolling Stone in 2014 of the Sound City collaboration. "I knew who Dave was because I'd met him, and he said 'I have a couple of friends coming along.' And during the session I hear them talking: 'Wow, we haven't played since Nirvana.' So I found myself in the middle of a Nirvana reunion." Asked at the time if he and Grohl would perform together again, McCartney said, "You never know."
The second of McCartney's two O2 Arena shows will resume on Sunday night in London.
