Famed fashion designer L'Wren Scott has died of an apparent suicide. Her assistant found her in her apartment on the west side of Manhattan, hanging from a scarf on a doorknob, ABC News reports.  She was 47 years old.

She was pronounced dead on arrival and police found no note or sign of foul play. The medical examiner's office will determine the cause of death.

Scott was romantically linked to Rolling Stones frontman Mick Jagger. A spokesperson for Jagger said the singer, who is currently on tour in Australia, is "completely shocked and devastated by the news. He and Scott had been together since 2001.

Scott was a renowned stylist and fashion designer who dressed A-listers such as Nicole Kidman, Angelina Jolie, Amy Adams, Sarah Jessica Parker and Penélope Cruz as well as First Lady Michelle Obama.

Born Laura "Luann" Bambrough, she was raised by adoptive parents in Utah and started her career after being scouted by Bruce Weber while he was shooting Calvin Klein campaign. She began modeling in Paris during the mid-1980s, where she worked for Chanel and Thierry Mugler before changing her name to L'Wren Scott.

In the mid-1990s, she worked on design and styling projects, consulting on costumes for films such as Eyes Wide Shut and Mercy. In 2006, she launched her eponymous label.

Upon the news of her death, collaborator Bobbi Brown stated: "I am devastated by the tragic news about L'Wren. She was a visionary designer who I very much enjoyed working with, but she was also smart and kind. My thoughts and heartfelt condolences go out to her loved ones during this very sad time."

Fellow designer Marc Jacobs tweeted: "Rest in peace, L'Wren Scott. You'll forever be missed."
