Several publications, including Rolling Stone, NPR, Complex, and others, included her debut mixtape "To Hell With It" on their year-end lists for 2021.

Known by her Tiktok username, PinkPantheress has been crowned the winner of BBC Radio One's Sound of 2022 poll. The poll attempts to forecast which UK-based artists and musicians will have the most effect in the future year. Previous winners have included Sam Smith, Florence and the Machine, and Adele, among others.

Up to date, PinkPantheress's name remains a mystery, even from BBC themselves.

Asked about why she shrouds her identity, the 20-year old rising star says that he appreciates her privacy as she feels like it would start "getting too much for people" if she had her face and music everywhere.

PinkPantheress just began releasing music a year ago, but her tracks, which include breathy vocals over classic garage sounds, have quickly gained popularity on social media platforms.

When she reached the Top 40 in August, Coldplay covered her single, "Just For Me" at BBC Radio 1's Live Lounge.

She began posting 12-second excerpts of her music on TikTok in January 2021, using the app as a "focus group" to pick which songs to complete and which ones to scrape together.

A single of those tunes, "Pain", which features a sample of Sweet Female Attitude's Flowers, went viral in January and peaked at number 35 on the UK singles chart in its completed form.

After being signed to Parlophone Records, she released her first mixtape, To Hell With It, in October, which featured a mix of her early home compositions as well as new songs produced in the studio for the first time.

Sound of 2022' Runners-Up

The BBC has released its annual Sound Of longlist, which includes a variety of musical genres.

The artists on the 2022 list, intended to highlight new and emerging artists expected to make an impact on the upcoming year, also include duo Wetleg, and balladeer Mimi Webb.

Three years onto their band, the duo Wetleg managed to place second on the Sound Of list. Initially starting "for fun", the duo, Hester Chambers and Rhian Teasdale found themselves in the middle of "buzz and hype," which the two are estranged to.

Taking inspiration from one of the UK's most successful singer-songwriters Adele, 20-year old Mimi Webb came in third on the Sound Of list. A talent show regular, Mimi is a "precocious talent with a powerful, octave-destroying vocal range", as she was an all-out performer since she was a toddler in her hometown of Canterbury, New Zealand.

The list is compiled by a panel of 130 industry professionals, including DJs, journalists, and festival bookers. Members of the panel include past nominees and newcomers Billie Eilish, Ed Sheeran, and Jorja Smith, who all contributed to this year's picks.
