It's been six years since The Rolling Stones released their last album titled "Blue & Lonesome," and fans can't wait to hear new content from the iconic English rock band. Recently, guitarist Keith Richards shared his thoughts on releasing new music. Is the band dropping an album this year?

During an interview on "CBS Sunday Morning," the 78-year-old musician confirmed that the legendary band has been working on new music.

Frontman Mick Jagger and drummer Steve Jordan have also been involved in the music writing process.

Speaking about Jordan's involvement with the band after replacing Charlie Watts last year following his death, the guitarist said it'll be "interesting" to find out how their group will work now that they have a new member aboard.

"It's sort of metamorphosing into something else. I was working with Mick last week, and Steve, and we came up with some, eight or nine new pieces of material. Which is overwhelming by our standards. Other times, [songwriting is] like a desert," he added. (via Ultimate Classic Rock)

When asked why new projects for the band can be easier or more challenging at times, the musician said it's related to their "muse," before joking if he could find her address.

At the time of this writing, neither one of the members has confirmed an official release date or the title of their upcoming album.

The last album, "Blue & Lonesome," was released in 2015, but it was composed of covered Blues songs. The last time the group dropped original material was in 2005 for their LP "A Bigger Bang."

Last year, "The Rolling Stones" released a 40th-anniversary edition of their hit 1981 album "Tattoo You."

The commemoration project featured additional recorded parts by Watts before he died a few months ago.

Speaking about the experience, Jagger previously revealed in an interview that the legendary drummer work on "just a few fills and stuff like that," and they are now having a hard time recording without their excellent pal.

"Without Charlie being there, it's going to be very difficult. And we've got tracks, which obviously have Charlie on them. But if we do new things, we won't," he added.

The last time the frontman teased about a new album was in 2020, saying the band had already recorded a few "good" tracks, but they needed to get together and do more sessions.
