Katy Perry is a fish out of water - literally.
Perry in Ariel costume would have been epic - but it was an epic fail. Although it did make many people laugh, which makes it a success too.
Katy Perry was costumed as Ariel from "The Little Mermaid" when she fell from her judge chair on Sunday's "American Idol" program.
Ryan Seacrest, the program's host, was on stage announcing the episode when his entire face plummeted in response to the audience's gasps because a loud thump was heard.
"Oh!" Seacrest gasps as the camera swings over to the judges, where Perry's mermaid tail peeks out over the table, as co-stars Luke Bryan, who is chuckling madly, and Lionel Richie rush to assist the "Fireworks" singer.
"Are you ok? Are you alright? She's alright," Richie says as he, Bryan, and Seacrest hoist Perry back upwards and into her chair. She does not look hurt though, although she could just be hiding it. What she's obviously is of course - embarrassed. Katy Perry laughs a bit before taking a sip of her water.
As Perry, 37, takes a sip of water and says, "Thank you," the audience begins to scream her name.
"Hell with mermaid!" Bryan yelled as Richie added, "I love it!"

Perry shared the clumsy moment to her Instagram page, writing, "Flippin' your fins you don't get too far ️," in reference to "The Little Mermaid" song "Part of Your World."
She added, "swipe to see what nearly killed @lionelrichie," beside a snap of her fake fork, dubbed a "dinglehopper" in the film.
Perry had earlier that day teased the Disney-themed program with many photos in her Ariel costume.
"look at this #americanidol episode, isn't it neat?" She captioned a photo in which she posed with her fork wearing a green tail, a purple shell bra, and flowing red hair.
She also released numerous videos, including one in which a group of people collaborated to slide the latex tail onto the celebrity and another in which Perry was brought into the stage on a dolly.
"some BTS of a lil Sunday sushi #americanidol," she captioned the photo.
Her dog, which she shares with fiancé Orlando Bloom, was dressed like Ariel's faithful fish companion Flounder.
