Donald Glover's "This is America" might have been the most career-defining hit he has ever had in his musical career. The Grammy-winning song was considered a cultural reset by many, but originally, it was only supposed to be a diss track for a certain rapper.

Donal Glover and Drake's feud has fueled several media headlines in the past, and just like any order feud out there, there comes the point when one of the other thought about letting out a huge blow but retracted it at the last minute - that was Donald Glover's "This is America."

Donald Glover 'This is America' Lyrics Diss Track Worthy

In a GQ Interview, Donald Glover put down all of his defenses and became candid in breaking down moments of his career, and this included going back and expounding on his iconic song, "This is America."

Apparently, the song, praised for its poignant and powerful message and imagery, was supposed to be a low blow for Drake on Donald Glover's alleged one-sided beef with the rap superstar.

"I had the idea three years before. I told Hiro [Murai] the idea, and he's like, 'I really want to do that.'... The idea for the song started as a joke," he revealed.

Turns out, the "This is America" lyric is what Murai and Glover had back then."

"It started as a Drake diss, to be honest, as like a funny way of doing it. But then I was like, this s-t sounds kind of hard, though. So I was like, let me play with it," he continued.

The song earned  Record of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Rap/Sung Performance and Best Music Video at the 61st Annual Grammy Awards, making Glover the first hip-hop artist to win the award and the first rap song to win both Record and Song of the Year.

Written and produced by Donald Glover, aka Childish Gambino, and Ludwig Goranson, the song even had writing credits attributed to the now embattled rapper, Young Thug.

But what made the song even more special was it's very meaningful "This is America" music video, beautifully and intricately crafted by both Murai and Glover. Its representations and underlying imagery have been praised by many critics and fans alike because of its subversiveness.

Donald Glover, Drake Feud

In 2014, Glover had a few words for Drizzy, who, despite his revered status for the "Atlanta" star, was no better than him.

"But I don't dislike Drake. I think he's a really good writer and rapper. Right now, I definitely think I'm better than him, but only because I'm working harder than him right now. If he came in right now like, 'Let's rap,' I'd be like, 'Oh, I'mma kill you.' But like right now. Maybe he's got something up his sleeve," he said at the time.
