Dave Grohl and Melissa Auf der Maur once became the hottest couple in the music industry, but things did not work out between them in the end.

Speaking with "Sirius XM Radio's Fierce: Women In Music," Auf der Maur broke her silence about her relationship with Grohl decades ago and how their breakup was bittersweet. The ex-couple briefly dated from 1999 to 2001, during which they were both busy with their respective bands' promotions: Hole with "Celebrity Skin" and Foo Fighters with "There Is Nothing Left to Lose."

Grohl and Auf de Maur's past relationship took the spotlight as the latter appeared as the first guest of the show's new season. Host Lori Majewski asked about her romance with the Foo Fighters bassist, saying they "brought in the 21st century together" and were "a very compatible match."

The former Hole and The Smashing Pumpkins member said their time with their bands pushed them together until they became a couple.

During their relationship, Auf de Maur left Hole and having her farewell finale tour with The Smashing Pumpkins while Grohl was enjoying a spotlight with the Foo Fighters.

"We had a very similar group that we came from, from our hometowns that we were, you know, integrity-based, independent, you know, we weren't like starving to be rock stars," she said. "We came from very integrity-based music scenes in our cool cities."

However, they soon decided to part ways but assured it was all love when they split. Per Auf der Maur, their choice to continue without each other was clear, revealing that the reason behind their breakup was due to her desire to step out of the spotlight and Grohl's wish to continue chasing his ambitions.

Twenty years after their split, Grohl savored big success with Foo Fighters while his ex-girlfriend became an art factory hero.

After their relationship did not work out, the former couple went on to marry different people.

Auf der Maur married filmmaker Tony Stone with whom she shares her 11-year-old daughter with. They co-founded the nonprofit multidisciplinary art center, Basilica Hudson, in 2010, per People.

Meanwhile, the Foo Fighters bassist has three children with TV producer Jordyn Blum. He has also been busy expanding the band's career along with their new drummer, Josh Freese.
