'Empire' Edges Madonna for Billboard 200 Top Spot, but Did New Metrics Steal a Landmark Accomplishment from Pop Star?
This week's Billboard 200 was topped by the Empire Soundtrack: Season 1, but it touches off an interesting battle between it and Madonna's Rebel Heart, which finished no. 2. The current Billboard metrics place Empire at no. 1 with 130,000 "equivalent" albums sold—a count that includes total single downloads and album streams as well. Madge's album only sold 121,000 "equivalent" albums but unofficial tracking of pure album sales—or what the Billboard 200 used to be based on—suggest that Rebel Heart actually sold more albums than Empire did as a whole. -
Patti Smith to Induct Lou Reed Into Rock and Roll Hall of Fame: Stevie Wonder, John Mayer and Fall Out Boy to Intro Others
Patti Smith will posthumously induct her friend and former Velvet Underground singer Lou Reed into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame next month. Beck will be in charge of paying tribute to the icon as well for the performance segment. Other speakers include Stevie Wonder for Bill Withers, Paul McCartney for Ringo Starr, Fall Out Boy for Green Day and John Mayer for Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble, 'Rolling Stone' noted. The hall has yet to announce who will introduce Joan Jett & The Blackhearts. -
Diplo and K-Swiss Launch The Board, a Creative, Crowdsourced Initiative
You may remember those commercials Diplo did back in the day with BlackBerry that were all over TV several years ago. Well, now the Jack Ü member has found himself a new partner in the form of K-Swiss. The new commercial deal, titled "The Board," is creating a new creative team that will work under the watchful eye of Diplo. The team will be crowdsourced through an application on the K-Swiss site. -
