• Ed Sheeran, Sam Smith and Mark Ronson Drive Huge UK Streaming Numbers

    If you want a primer on how music streaming is taking off around the world, consider the year-to-year numbers from the UK, stretching from 275 million plays last July to 500 million through the tracking period that ended July 16, 2015. That's not exactly the "double" that Billboard's headline claimed (math, guys) but that is a remarkable jump. Residents of the UK have streams more than 11.5 billion songs, an 80 percent increase on the first six months of 2014, thanks to Mark Ronson, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith.

After Minaj slammed the award show and (sort of) Swift on Twitter, the two male nominees for the illustrious VOTY award joked about getting into a spat ahead of the Aug. 30 air date.

According to the site, final decisions were largely based on sales results from its charts, but a performer's deception to their home state via its lyrics also made a difference.   • Spotify Charts Most Popular Keys in 30 Million Song Catalogue (Hint: It's Major)

    Spotify's Insights blog took to the streaming service's massive music catalogue with the intent of figuring out what keys were most popular among the 30 million tracks. Every song is based around one of 12 possible notes, as well as a mode (generally major for "happier" music and minor for "sad"). That results in nearly every piece of Western music being played in one of 24 possible keys. Jazz pianist Kenny Ning moonlights as a data analyst for Spotify and he charted the results of what he found. So what key was most popular?
