‘Knight Rider’ Reboot Planned as a John Cena-Kevin Hart Comedy; Takes Cue from ‘Jump Street’
The Weinstein Company is eyeing on bringing another classic television program to the big screen. In their iteration of "Knight Rider," the production company plans to make it a comedic movie in the vein of the "Jump Street" movies, with WWE Superstar John Cena and comedian Kevin Hart as its main stars.
According to Screen Rant, the production outfit wants to have Cena play as "Knight Rider" main character Michael Knight, while Hart will provide the voice for Knight's artificially-intelligent car KITT. While both celebrities have not been officially cast for the said roles, this certainly gives away the tone that they are targeting for the "Knight Rider" project.
The idea to turn "Knight Rider" into a comedic movie seems to take inspiration from Phil Lord and Chris Miller's successful "Jump Street" revivals, Cinema Blend reports. Starting with 2012's "21 Jump Street" and continued with "22 Jump Street" in 2014, Lord and Miller took the serious and edgy television program of the same name and turned it into comedic gold. Jonah Hill and Channing Tatum, along with Ice Cube, brought in the gags for their revival of the Johnny Depp-starred television series.
On the other end of the spectrum, a different-themed "Knight Rider" is being proposed by David Hasselhoff. Portraying as Michael Knight in the original "Knight Rider" television series, "The Hoff" is discussing with director Robert Rodriguez on an edgier, "Logan"-esque take the reboot.
Originally aired from 1982 to 1986, "Knight Rider" follows Knight and KITT as the primary field agent of the Foundation for Law and Government or FLAG and sent to different missions to handle criminal threat. The series gained a cult following years after the end of its syndication, with several plans to revive the franchise. Hasselhoff, in his "Knight Rider" appearance, is referenced by Chris Pratt in "Guardians of the Galaxy Vol.2," with Pratt's character Peter Quill keeping a picture of him and refers to him as his ideal father.
