We've heard our fair share of "Stacy's Mom" covers. But 1930s-style hot jazz? That's new. Especially when an American Idol alum is involved. That'd be Casey Abrams, who recently helped out Scott Bradlee and Postmodern Jukebox with their version of the Fountains of Wayne hit.

"To be honest it's one of the only songs I know by heart for some reason," Abrams told The Hollywood Reporter. "If I really love [a song], I learn it ... I figured, let's combine two things I love which is Fountains of Wayne and jazz."

Abrams, who played the upright bass and (spoiler) melodica solo during the video, has a jazz background he often showed off during his 2012 American Idol run. He's currently pursuing a career in the genre.

"I like to keep surprises," he told The Desert Sun before headlining a fundraiser at the Idyllwild Arts Academy in California. "And when I say surprises, it actually means I have no idea what's going to happen. But that's the beauty of it. That's jazz. The audience is listening to something you're creating on the spot and, at the same time, you're hearing it for the first time as well. So you're in the same spot as the audience, in some ways."

His new-found fame has allowed Abrams to join his actual idols onstage, including longtime hero Jack Black.

"I showed up and he needed a bass player for one of his segments," Abrams said. "I had an upright bass, so I got up and scatted with him. It was really cool. He's a good musician. Great entertainer, but, at the same time, a great musician."
