Right on the heels of us learning that Anthony Geary will be departing General Hospital for good this summer, it has also been confirmed that Genie Francis is returning for another spin as Laura Spencer. Francis returns to the soap on a storyline dictated basis with her last visit lasting 5 months back in 2013. GH honchos have said the official reason for her return now is that her family needs her. Executive producer Frank Valentini has the tedious task of writing Geary out of the fictional town of Port Charles in a way that befits his nearly 40 years as a cast member. It makes sense that Francis would play a role in that.
A rep for the show tells TVLine Francis will return "in a few weeks." The show is not yet releasing any information what brings Laura back into the action."Genie is a part of our GH family and the door has always been open for her to return when the timing and story are right. Lucky for us, the stars have aligned and we are thrilled to welcome Genie back home," said Valentini in a statement.
In case you aren't familiar, Geary and Francis portray the first official soap super couple, Luke and Laura Spencer, whose wedding in 1981 was one of the biggest pop culture events of the year. Even Princess Diana sent the fictional couple bottles of champagne to celebrate the faux vows. While both Geary and Francis have come and gone from the cast over the years, their permanent imprint on GH makes them daytime royalty.
We still have no idea what will become of Geary's character, although he has said that he hopes it's something catastrophic. No matter how the writers decide to handle his exit it will likely give Francis some serious story to sink her teeth into. Her first air date is June 5, will you be watching?
