Antonio Valencia, Michael Carrick, Marouane Fellaini, and Luke Shaw are also set to sit out this match, leaving Van Gaal with some important boots to fill in his lineup. Rooney is experiencing an illness and can afford to miss out against the EPL newcomers Watford.

"It's not so heavy as everybody has written in the media, but he cannot play against Watford," the manager said of Martial. "Maybe PSV for Martial but it's not certain, and I think Rooney shall also play then because illness is not something of many days. And Valencia, of course, has been operated on before the international break already, then Shaw, so we have five injured players, and that's a lot."

Meanwhile, Watford midfielder Almen Abdi this week opened up about this important game.

"We haven't played them yet so it's going to be very interesting for us, and myself, because they are a great team and it's a good test for us. We are playing at home though, and I think everything is possible for us. We want the three points," the Watford player explained. "Our confidence levels are pretty high. Against Leicester I think we could have taken at least a point, but we were unlucky and we know that we can play well against any team in this league. If we start well, and with the fantastic crowd, I think we can do something."
