Before leaving the club this week, Mourinho charged his players with "betraying" his coaching. This makes us wonder how the team will perform now that he's gone. Were they really holding back? Sunderland coach Sam Allardyce spoke to the press this week about Jose's departure and this same question.
"I'm sad to see Jose go. One, because I got to know him quite well and, two, he's a great manager with great character and he's a loss to the Premier League," he said, according to PremierLeague.com. "Only time will tell on whether there's a better performance, or reaction, from the players than while Jose was in charge. It's a pretty bad indictment on the players if they perform better than they have done recently just because Jose has lost his job, but, who knows, there seems to be that reaction sometimes from a squad of players. Because of the underachievement that's happened at Chelsea, even a great manager like Jose has lost his job, and that shows you we are all in the business of results when we manage a football club."
