Whoopi Goldberg has some strong emotions against "American Idol" as she expressed those thoughts on national television on "The View." The statements were surprising given the gravity of her description of the show.
Giving critique of another show is fairly normal, but not when it is also being aired on the same network one's show was.
Whoopi Goldberg Calls Out 'American Idol'
In the most recent episode of "The View," Whoopi Goldberg did not mince her words about the beloved reality singing competition.
As they were discussing Anna Nicole Smith's new documentary, "You Don't Know Me," the conversation about judging others had the EGOT winner talking in an impassioned manner, like she always does. (via Entertainment Tonight)
"I think, you know, that we as a society love to watch stuff, to judge folks," Goldberg pointed out. "I've always thought that the beginning of the downfall of society was with... what's the name of that show?"
One producer who was out of the frame shouted "American Idol," to which she vocally agreed, unleashing unsure grins and laughs across the hosts' bench.
But Whoopi tried to justify her remark, saying that it began on another network. Notably, "The View" is aired on ABC, the same network that revived "American Idol" in 2018.

For Goldberg, "once we gave people the ability to judge other people, I think we ran amok," saying that this cycle invites the public to "decide" who that person was.
The multi-hyphenate host also continued to justify her statements, while her co-hosts attempt to woo her by staying a positive tone toward their sister show.
"When I was watching it, ABC didn't have it. It was a different show. It's a very different show. The judges are different... ABC knows that I feel like this. I've told them. It has nothing to do with them. It has to do with the show," she explained.

Whoopi's statements came not more than a week since "American Idol" hailed its Season 21 winner, Iam Tongi. Like most seasons, not people online weren't in favor of Tongi's huge win, which cut the long streak of country music singers winning the competition.
Tongi received backlash on social media for his win, with people saying that the runners-up should have won instead of him.
