It took The Rolling Stones almost two decades before finalizing the release of their upcoming album, "Hackney Diamonds."

The highly anticipated material, which will be released on October 20, will serve as a follow-up to their 2005 album, "A Bigger Bang." It will also be their first project since Charlie Watt's death in August 2021.

The Rolling Stones did not share why it took them a long time before they were able to complete the album, but Keith Richards recently shared a glimpse of what happened that affected the production and album-making process.

Why The Rolling Stones Took 18 Years To Release a New Album Revealed

Speaking in an interview with BBC, Richards revealed that Jagger made some songs bad when the band tried to record them. Thus, it resulted in a long delay in the release of "Hackney Diamonds."

"From my point of view, the essential thing about making a record is that the singer has to want to sing the material," he said. "Mick, given a song that he's not interested in, can really make it bad. And that's maybe one of the reasons it took 18 years because Mick's waves of enthusiasm come and go."

Despite the interruption, Richards spoke about how "very real guys" the Rolling Stones members are that they know which song deserves to be in an album and which one does not.

The guitarist also hyped fans by revealing that they cut the record primarily for vinyl as it is the best way to listen to a record.

Meanwhile, although Jagger affected the album's release, Richards praised him for pushing them to begin working on the record after their tour.

Before the "Hackney Diamonds" arrival, The Rolling Stones revealed that the album features several musicians, including Lady Gaga, Stevie Wonder, Paul McCartney, Elton John and the band's original bassist Bill Wyman.

"We wouldn't have put this album out if we didn't really like it," Jagger said. "We must say that we are quite pleased with it ... and we hope you all like it."

The band spread the news about the material by also putting an ad in the Hackney Gazette where they referenced some of their hit songs. It also included their lips logo and the text 1962 - the year the group was formed.
